Obituary of A. O. Mathew, MD

Dr. A. O. Mathew, affectionately called Kuttiyachan, passed away on December 30th 2019 at the home of his beloved daughter Annie in California. He was surrounded by Molly, his wife of 53 years, children, grandchildren and family. He has been a life member of the AKMG from its very inception.

Dr. Mathew was a gentleman ̶ soft-spoken, kind, considerate, and congenial. He was in fact a perfect personification of a pediatrician, gentleman, husband, father, and grandfather, according to Dr. Enas A. Enas, who has been a family friend since 1963, when both of them were students at Calicut Medical College.

Dr. Mathew came to the US in 1968 and did his pediatric residency at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston near Chicago, Illinois. Upon finishing the residency, he moved to Quincy, a quiet river city along the banks of the Mississippi river, more than 300 miles away from the hustle and bustle of Chicago. He had a thriving pediatric practice until he retired in 2002.

After his retirement, he moved to Racine, Wisconsin and stayed with his elder son Joe Mathew, an internist. He and his wife Molly spent their winters in Trivandrum and other times visiting his children and grandchildren in Florida and California.

His hobbies included reading, photography, listening to classical music, watching soccer, and playing tennis. Both Mathew and Molly enjoyed a special love for animals (cats, dogs, fish, birds, and even chickens).

He was the inspiration and guiding force behind his two sons, Joseph and Tom becoming doctors and encouraged and supported his daughter Annie to become an artist. Annie is married to Deep Patel, another wonderful doctor. He is survived by his beloved wife Molly, sons Joseph and Thomas, daughter Annie, and his beloved grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for spring 2020 in Racine, Wisconsin. Donations can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in honor of Dr. A. O. Mathew.
