Kottapurathu Kochumohamed KunjuMoideen, lovingly called ‘KKK’ by his close friends, was born in 1955 in Charanalloor, Ernakulam District. His family moved to Nilamboor when he was in grade 4, where he grew up and completed high school. He went on to pursue his college education in Farook College, Feroke, Kozhikode District where he successfully completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry, to reach his cherished goal of becoming a chemist.

However, under the persuasion of his grandfather who nurtured a dream for his grandson to become a doctor, Moideen decided to join Calicut Medical College. He belonged to the 19th batch of Calicut Medical College, 1975 start. After completing his MBBS, he had a brief sojourn, working in Uganda and then Kenya. It was during this time that he married Sulaikha, his life partner for the rest of his life. He later moved on from Kenya to Saudi Arabia, where he completed the necessary steps to apply for a residency program in USA.

Being a very hard working and intelligent person, Moideen was accepted for a residency position in New York in internal medicine without difficulty. He carried on his training with an Oncology fellowship at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. On completing his fellowship, he moved to Canada where he held a faculty position at the prestigious Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After a few years, he decided to return to USA and worked in various cities, searching for better opportunities and finally settling in sunny Orlando, Florida. Moideen worked as an oncologist at Florida Cancer Specialists in Orlando until he retired 3 months ago.

Moideen was a courageous person with a loving heart. He was our class representative along with Joseph AP who did their job very well during the tumultuous Emergency period of India. He was well known for his martial art skills in Karate. We will never forget his performance in a ‘Karate’ demonstration at the College Day celebration of the medical college. He was also interested in art and poetry. But more than anything else, he was a fighter – for a good cause and never hesitated to stand up for what he believed was right. He was a great organizer and leader and was part of the organizing team for 2020 AKMG Symphony Cruise Convention, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We will never forget the many enjoyable trips over the last six years, where we travelled with him in a group, to various countries that included England, Spain and Greece.

Moideen is survived by his wife Sulaikha and three beautiful and intelligent daughters. His daughter Sherin, is a doctor in Virginia where she lives with her husband Abrar, who is an attorney and their two young children, Aiden and Razi. His daughter Nitasha is a doctor in South Carolina where she lives with her husband Omar who is also a doctor. His daughter Nikitha is a doctor in Ontario where she lives with her husband Safi who is also a doctor. Moideen is survived by his three brothers, two sisters and a 94-year old mother living in Kerala.
